"Ichthus" - Faithful Fish

Ichthus is the Greek word for fish. In the first century, under Roman law, it was illegal to be Christian. When two strangers met on the road and wondered if the other was Christian, one would draw an arch in the dirt. If the second person finished the drawing of a fish by creating another intersecting arch, they knew they were amongst friends.  The symbol of the fish was used by Greeks, Romans, and Pagans so the drawing in the sand created little suspicion.

I finished this painting "Faithful Fish" long before blue and white and sunflowers meant something else to the world. I didn't notice the correlation myself until a gallery visitor said, "You created a painting for the Ukrainian people."

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this art work will go to support the people  of the Ukraine.  May we all live in peace.
